TOWSON, Md. -- The Fairfield University softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader at the Tiger Clash on Sunday, the final day of the two-day event hosted by Towson University. The Stags were edged in the first game by Mount St. Mary's as they could tried to overcome a two-run early deficit but ended up short in a 2-1 final score. Later that day, Fairfield was outscored by the host school with the Tigers scoring in four of five innings en route to a 9-1 result.
Freshman pitcher
Lauryn
Rhinehart went the distance in the opening game and allowed just five hits in her six innings of work. Mount St. Mary's touched the rookie for a single run in both the third and fourth innings. Lindsay
Heinze brought home the first run with a single to left field that chased home Kirsten
Mumma, who opened the inning with a walk. The lead went to 2-0 in the next inning after Emilee Kirk opened the frame with a double and would score off a sacrifice fly later.
Fairfield put its run on the board in the fifth inning as
Rhinehart began the inning with a walk. Two batters later, Rachel
Sieber laced a double which allowed
Rhinehart to race home to cut the lead to 2-1. The Stags threatened to tie the game in their final at-bat after
Angelina McGuire led off the inning with a double. After being sacrificed to third base, the senior outfielder was stranded there after a foul out and a ground out brought the game to an end.
In the second game, Towson scored in every inning
including a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Fairfield pulled within a run after it scored its only run of the game in the second inning. McGuire was at the heart of this rally as well, picking up a walk with one out, She secured second base on a ground out and went to third on a wild pitch.
Kate Robinson came to the plate with the RBI opportunity, and cashed in with a base hit to make the score 2-1. Towson responded with two runs in the second inning and tacked on three more runs in the third inning to take command of the game.
The Stags will return home for a day before heading to the West Coast for an eight-game road trip that begins with Cal-State Fullerton on March 13.
