Softball Picks Up Win In West Coast Opener, Brzezinski Earns 800th Victory

Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. -- Head Coach Julie Brzezinski collected her 800th career win as the Fairfield University softball team opened its West Coast road trip with a 4-2 win over Cal-State Fullerton in a rain-delayed game. The Stags improved their overall record to 6-8 while the Titans dropped to 11-12 overall.

Fairfield never trailed in the game, opening the contest with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Amanda Ulzheimer started the opening rally by reaching first base after being hit by a pitch. Courtney Hankins followed with an infield single which included an error after the hit that allowed Ulzheimer to come around and score the game's first run.  After Hankins ended up at second base following the miscue, she would advance to third base following a wild pitch. Kristen Ball would bring home the second run with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The home team tied the game in the bottom of the second inning as an error opened up a few chances for Cal State Fullerton. Following an error and a stolen base, Bryanna Ybarra put runners on the corners with a single up the middle. Emily Randall lofted a fly ball to right field which chased home the first Titan run and cut the score to 2-1. Ybarra tied the game after Julia Valenzuela sent a single to the outfield, knotting the score at 2-2.

The Stags would take the lead for good when they plated a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, starting with Mikayla Rubin's leadoff double. She took third base after Ulzheimer grounded out and scored the go-ahead run when Hankins' ground ball was mishandled. Fairfield added an insurance run when Angelina McGuire sent a double to the right field corner, sending Hankins home to push the lead to 4-2.

Pitcher Destinee Pallotto made those runs stand up by pitching five scoreless innings even though the Titans were able to place a runner in scoring position in four of those five frames. The senior earned the victory after she scattered nine hits, struck out two hitters and walked just one.

Fairfield will continue its west coast swing with a pair of games in San Diego on Wednesday. The Stags will start the day with San Diego State beginning at 7:30 pm (ET) followed by another contest with San Diego at 10 pm (ET).
