FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Webster Bank Arena has certainly been friendly to the Fairfield University men's basketball team this year. The Stags have played nine games in the facility this year and have come away with wins in seven of those outings. And one of the reasons for the team's success at Webster Bank Arena is simply scoring as Fairfield has posted three of its top four point totals on that court, scoring 104 points against Niagara, 103 points versus Iona, and 88 points in the Rider game. The good news is that the Stags will play three of their final four games at Webster Bank Arena, beginning with Thursday's match up with Marist College. Game time is 7 p.m.
The Stags have won seven of 10 games overall and four of six MAAC games at home this year. Fairfield will try and regroup after dropping a pair of games in upstate New York, falling to Niagara on Saturday afternoon and Canisius on Monday night.
Tyler Nelson scored 30 points during the two-game swing, highlighted by his 17 markers against Niagara.
Wassef Methnani continues to emerge as the team's top option off the bench as the freshman tallied a game-high 18 points in the Canisius game, the fourth straight contest in which he was the leading or co-leading reserve scorer.
Over the last four games, the forward averaged 10.5 points per game off the bench, which raised his season scoring average to 6.0 points per game.
Jonathan Kasibabu took over the top spot in the MAAC for field goal percentage, coming into tonight with a .664 field goal percentage (75 of 113). Nelson brings a conference-leading 21.2 scoring average into the weekend, followed by
Ferron Flavors Jr.'s 11.6 points per contest.
Nelson comes into the Marist game just shy of setting the school career scoring record. With 1,971 career points, he needs 36 more points to surpass Tony George '86 who scored 2,006 points during his career. The senior set the school's record for most three pointers in a career, hitting the historic shot at Niagara during the second half. He comes into this contest with 284 career three pointers, eclipsing Derek Needham '13 who netted 281 during his four-year stay.
The Red Foxes jumped out to a 12-point halftime lead but could not survive a late rally by first-place Rider University, resulting in an 89-79Â setback last Saturday. The two teams combined for 102 points in the second half with the Broncs needing to score 62 point to overcome the Red Foxes' early success. Tobias Sjoberg posted his third career double-double with 13 points and a career-best 13 rebounds in 22 minutes of play. Ryan Funk led all Marist scorers with 18 points, netting four three pointers to account for most his scoring output.Â
Marist is looking for its first road win since knocking off Manhattan at Draddy Gymnasium, a 62-59 decision on January 30. The team's highest offensive output this season came on the road when Marist ran past The Citadel by a 100-91 behind 22 points from Funk and a double-double by Aleksander Dozic (19 points, 11 rebounds). The Red Foxes have three double-figure scorers on the team, led by junior Brian Parker who posts 17.6 points per game. Parker ranks fifth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) scoring list. David Knudsen (11.6 ppg)Â and Funk (11.0 ppg) are the team's third double-digit scorers.
