Wassef Methnani was the team’s top scoring reserve for most of the season, contributing 4.3 points per game through his 30 appearances off the bench. The forward scored in double figures four times, beginning with a 10-point afternoon against UMass. He followed up with a season-best 16 points at Niagara, making eight of 12 field goal attempts. He collected a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds against Monmouth before posting 12 points at Siena one game later. Methnani just missed a double double on two occasions when he posted 10 points and nine rebounds against UMass and 12 points and eight rebounds at Siena. Methnani also showed his long-range shooting capability with five three pointers, hitting one each against UMass, at Maryland, Saint Peter’s, Monmouth, and Siena. He placed second on the team with 20 blocks (0.7 per game) which placed 14th in the MAAC.
2018-19
Methnani served as the team's top scoring reserve during the 2018-19 season, recording a 5.4 scoring average along with a 2.8 rebounding average. He showed his ability to score from anywhere on the court, with 20 of his 61 field goals coming from behind the three-point line. He was one of five Stags to shoot better than 40 percent from the floor, sporting a .418 field goal percentage (61 of 146). From outside the arc, Methnani owned a .351 field goal percentage with 20 made in 57 tries which included a 3 for 5 effort against Siena College. He posted at least one three-point field in 15 games, highlighted by a streak of at least one three pointer in six consecutive games from January 24 to February 9 (9 for 21 - 43 percent). He netted at least 10 points in five contests through the season with his 15-point effort against Siena standing out as his best performance. He had back-to-back double digits nights twice beginning with his 12 points against Denver and a matching total at Army. Methnani came back with 15 points against Siena followed by 11 markers versus Iona.He posted a double-double when he registered 12 points and 10 rebounds at Army.
2017-18
Methnani emerged as a viable option both offensively and defensively as a freshman. The forward averaged 6.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game in addition to posting nearly a block per contest (25 in 30 games). Methnani averaged 11 points per game during the team's MAAC tournament run, coming off the bench to score 15 points in the quarterfinals and 14 points in the championship game. He shot 59 percent from the floor during the postseason (16 of 27) and was above 50 percent in three of the four outings. Accuracy was not a problem for Methnani during his freshman campaign, shooting 48 percent overall (75 of 156). He was even effective from long range with 16 three pointers (45 attempts) and made at least one shot from behind the arc in each MAAC tournament game. He made eight of 13 three point tries over his final 10 games (62 percent). Methnani collected one block in 14 games, highlighted by his five rejections against Quinnipiac in the MAAC semifinals. Methnani posted 10 or more points in five games, starting with his season high of 20 points against Penn in his first collegiate game. He just missed a double-double in that game with eight rebounds, surpassing that with nine caroms twice (at Rider and at Marist) later in the season.
Before Fairfield:
Wassef Methnani joined the Fairfield University men’s basketball program after spending one season at The Knox School. He played at Knox along with current teammate Omar El-Sheikh. Methnani developed into one of the program’s top big men, especially with his defensive abilities. The forward was among the team’s top shot blockers at The Knox School. He brings international experience to the program, having represented Tunisia in several international tournaments, including a 14-point, five-rebound effort against Rwanda in the FIBA Afrobasket 2017 tournament.
