FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team might not have come away after Wednesday night's game as winners, but they certainly showed what their team mentality is all about. The Stags built up a 10-0 run and held unbeaten Northeastern without a field goal for the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter to close their deficit to just four points, but the Stags would ultimately fall 59-50 to the Huskies on the George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall.
The Stags (2-6) scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to close the game to a 45-40 margin with 3:30 left to play. Northeastern (8-0) snapped their seven minute scoreless stretch on a Shannon Todd jump shot, to extend their lead back to seven.
Khadidiatou Diouf responded in what could have been a momentum shifter for the Stags as she unleashed a 3-pointer from the top of the key that bounced high off the rim before ultimately going through the net for her first career 3-pointer.
Fairfield would get the game back to within four points on three separate occasions on in the contest, the last time coming after two Diouf free throws at 44 seconds remaining, but could not close the game to one possession.
The Stags shot 57 percent (8-for-14) in the fourth quarter compared to Northeastern's 22 percent (2-for-9). The Huskies, who set a program record with their eighth-straight win to begin a season, connected on 10 free throws in the period for the victory.
Despite playing shorthanded, the Stags were able to hang around within striking distance for much of the contest with the Huskies leading by 12 at the half.
Northeastern took their largest lead at 17 points at the 4:45 mark of the third quarter, but that would be the start of a 15-2 Fairfield run.
Casey Foley led a trio of Stags in double figures as she poured in 13 points and also tied for the team lead with two steals.
Katie Armstrong tallied eight of her 10 points in the second half, including the first six points for Fairfield in the fourth quarter.
The Stags also limited Northeastern's leading scorer Jess Genco to just six points, and one 3-pointer, two games after she set the program record with eight trifectas at Florida.
The Stags will hit the road and head to New Hampshire to take on Dartmouth on Sunday at 2pm.
