Field Hockey Shuts Out LIU Brooklyn, 4-0

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Fairfield field hockey finished out their conference slate in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with a 4-0 shutout win over LIU Brooklyn as four different Stags tallied a goal in the second half.

Fairfield started off the game putting pressure on the Blackbirds defense with multiple shots but could not get one past the goalkeeper.  In the 11th minute, LIU Brooklyn redirected a shot on goal, but Zoe Rosen made the save.  This was the only save of the game that Rosen needed to make as the Stags defense put forth a stifling effort leading to the shutout.  Neither team would score in the first half.

In the 41st minute of the second half, Emma Matlach broke the tie with a backhanded goal giving her 11 on the season.  Soon after, Cassie Hughes pushed her way through the Blackbirds defense and sent a backhanded shot passed the goalie to give the Stags a 2-0 lead halfway through the second half.  With just over a minute remaining, Malen Iglesias slapped a shot from the top of the crease into the goal to give Fairfield a commanding 3-0 lead.  As time expired, the Stags finished off a penalty corner with a goal as Gabby Saxon knocked it into the back of the cage for her first career goal as a Stag.

Fairfield outshot LIU Brooklyn 23 to four with 14 shots on goal to the Blackbirds one.  The Stags also were awarded six penalty corners and LIU Brooklyn were awarded one.

Fairfield will finish out the regular season on Saturday as they host Saint Louis on University Field at 12 P.M. for their senior day.  The Stags will then travel down to Monmouth University in West Long Branch, N.J. to compete in the MAAC Championships on November 2 and November 4.
