Biography

2018 Season: Cassie Hughes was a regular in the lineup as illustrated by her 21 starts in 2018. She was involved on both ends of the pitch highlighted by her five points inside the circle.  Hughes netted a pair of goals and added an assist to her season statistics, scoring a goal in the Columbia and LIU Brooklyn road games and earning an assist in the shutout of Lehigh University. Hughes applied pressure with her 11 shots on goal and 28 shots taken overall.

2017: MAAC All-Championship Team. Played and started in all 21 games. Tallied two goals and added three assists for seven points. Registered 16 shots on goal.

2016: Made appearances in all 21 games for the Stags in her second season while earning eight starts. Her first career start came against Penn on September 16. 

2015: Hughes came off the bench in five games this season for Fairfield.

Before Fairfield: Hughes is one of five international student-athletes on this year’s field hockey team, traveling from the United Kingdom to join the Stags. She has the versatility to play in the midfield or in the back third, achieving success at both positions while playing for St. John’s School. She was selected for England JRPC Tier 2 and Tier 2 trials as a U-17 and U-18 player. She became the first female in the history of St. John’s to earn full school colours for any sport, a distinction bestowed upon an individual for outstanding and excellence as well as contributing to the school at a consistent and high level. She was a member of the school’s 1st XI for four seasons and served as team captain for two seasons. She also captained the U-14 team in 2010. Hughes was selected for England Junior Regional Performance Centre Tier 2 (U-17, U-18). She also excelled with Surrey County Hockey as a U-15, U-16, and U-17 athlete, helping the teams capture the South of England Championship in 2012-14. Her club hockey team was played with The Wimbledon Club Ladies and Girls Hockey, where she represented the club in age-related teams from age 6. She was captain of the Club’s U-16 XI team and captured Wimbledon’s Player’s Player U-16 award following the 2012-13 season. Off the field, Hughes received The Duke of Edinburgh silver award in 2013 and the gold award in 2015. The Duke of Edinburgh Awards are a nationally-recognized series of awards requiring candidates to complete a series of skills, community service, and trips over a period of time. She was also a St. John’s School Prefect, a student appointed by the Headmaster as part of the student leadership team.

Personal: Daughter of Kathy and Stuart Hughes... Siblings: Madison (23) and Cameron (21)... her brother, Madison, is captain of the United States Rugby 7s Team... Major is Psychology.
