Biography

2021 Season: Malen Iglesias earned the NEC Player of the Year after leading the Stags in scoring and starting all 22 games during the fall of 2021. The midfielder posted 11 goals and two assists for 24 points, picking up at least one point in 10 of her 22 games played. Her most memorable game came against nationally-ranked Delaware when she posted two goals including the tying goal in the final seconds that sent the game into overtime. Iglesias was also the team’s specialist in penalty strokes, connecting on three of her four attempts in 2021. The senior recorded five game-winning goals during the campaign, netting the deciding goals against Albany, Villanova, Sacred Heart, Saint Francis, and Merrimack. Iglesias was also a member of the NFHCA National Academic Squad.

2020-21 Season: Iglesias’s play during the 2020-21 campaign helped her earn a spot on the All-Northeast Conference (NEC) first team and on the NFHCA All-Mideast Region second team. She received the honors after posting two goals and one assist for five points, scoring all of her points in the season opener and the season finale. Iglesias opened the year with the team’s second goal in a 3-0 victory against Albany. She finished her scoring for the season with a goal and an assist in a 5-0 decision over Sacred Heart, picking up a point on the team’s third goal and two points when scoring the team’s fourth goal. Nearly half of her shots taken were on target with six of her tries beating the goalkeeper or forcing a save.

2019 Season: Iglesias solidified the center third of the pitch for the coaching staff, contributing on both offense and defense all season. She earned a spot on the NFHCA All-Region team just after garnering an All-NEC first team berth. She tallied three goals and seven assists for 13 points, scoring a point in nine different games. Her first point came on the team’s first goal as the Stags rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat Boston College. The assist started a three-game scoring streak that continued with a goal and an assist against Vermont and a goal against Saint Francis. Iglesias also picked up a point in both of Fairfield’s NCAA Championship games, securing an assist against American and another at UConn. The midfielder started 21 of her 22 appearances, joining the starting lineup for each of the final 17 contests.

2018 Season: Iglesias showed her offensive capabilities throughout her first season with the team, posting four goals and two assists for 10 points. She was one of five Fairfield student-athletes to reach double figures in scoring. Her first goal as a Stag came in the team’s 2-0 win over Temple, netting the second goal of the game. She also scored a goal against Sacred Heart, Rider, and LIU Brooklyn. She was efficient inside the circle with four of her five shots on goal finding the back of the net. Her two assists came in the Holy Cross and UMass Lowell games.

Before Fairfield: A midfielder and defender from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Iglesias was a captain of her club field hockey team Ba.Na.De. and was a National Honors Society member.  She also played varsity soccer in high school.  She received the best player of the year award for her club in both 2013 and 2015 and was on the Maryland University Camp All-Star team in 2017.
