FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Nicole Aragones and
Diana Prinos both went 2-0 on the day to lead Fairfield University Women's Tennis to a 4-3 victory over Providence on a windy Thursday afternoon on the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts. The Stags also got individual wins from
Anna Komer and
Jessica Pil to down the visiting Friars.
"I'm really proud of how the team fought through very tough, windy conditions," said Head Coach
Jeff Bricker. "We recovered from the doubles point and stepped it up in singles. This was a great team win."
To open the day, Aragones and Prinos earned a win at No. 2 doubles, defeating Katie Marvin and Grace Goyette by a count of 6-3. However, the Friars rallied to win the doubles point and take a 1-0 edge in the match.
In singles action, Aragones started the scoring with a win at No. 4 (6-0, 6-2). Pil took a 6-4, 6-0 decision at No. 6 and Komer followed with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at No. 5. Those wins knotted the contest at 3-3 with Prinos and Providence's Aidan Epstein as the final remaining action at No. 2 singles. Prinos came away with the result (6-4, 6-4) to seal the win for the Stags in their first dual match of the fall.
The Stags resume dual play on Wednesday, Oct. 4 with a visit from Rider in the team's lone MAAC outing of the fall. Both the men's and women's teams will be in action on the WAC Tennis Courts beginning at 2 p.m.
