WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University women's tennis team took part in the West Point Invite this past weekend. The Stags tallied a total of 10 singles wins and six doubles wins including
Diana Prinos and
Nicole Aragones winning the 'B' Doubles back draw.
Emily Lombardi competed in the 'A' Singles Bracket defeating Marta Ruszczynska of Fairleigh Dickinson (6-4, 4-6, 11-9) before falling to Anna Shkudun of Syracuse (6-2, 6-1) in the round of 16.
Both
Anna Komer and
Jessica Pil dropped their 'C' Singles Bracket first-round matches before making a run in the consolation bracket. Komer defeated Cheyenne Brown from Colgate 8-3 in the back draw round of 16 and Pil took down Klein Kelly, also from Colgate, 8-4. In the quarterfinals, Pil defeated Megan Tan of Bryant, 8-2, while Komer moved on with a win over Kahlei Reisinger of St. Bonaventure, 8-2. Komer's run came to an end in the semifinals after falling to Maria Pandya from Binghamton, 8-7. Pil continued to the finals after defeating Adrianne Alfonso of Sacred Heart by default and after a tough effort, she fell to Maria Pandya, 8-6.
Shelby Vertula also found success in the 'B' Singles Consolation Bracket making it to the semifinals and falling to Michal Matson of Seton Hall, 8-0.
In the 'B' Doubles Bracket,
Diana Prinos and
Nicole Aragones as well as
Meghan Zimmer and
Gabriella Campos dropped their first-round matches and moved on to the back draw. In the quarterfinals, Zimmer and Campos defeated Ines Vujkovac and Mikaya Hamilton of NJIT, 6-,3 while Prinos and Aragones took down Adrianne Alfonso and Claudia Ruiz of Sacred Hear,t 6-3. These quarterfinal wins resulted in a match between teammates as Prinos and Aragones defeated Zimmer and Campos, 7-6 (6-4), and moved on to the finals. They would take home the finals win edging Bridget Mayfield and Leslie Frankland of Army West Point, 6-3.
"This was a good weekend for the women with some very tough teams playing," said Head Coach
Jeff Bricker. "We were able to compete and challenge all weekend and came away with some great wins. Confidence is high as we look to our match vs. Providence this Thursday at WAC."
Fairfield's next contest will be their first home match of the season at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts against Providence on Thursday at 3 p.m.
