Field Hockey Falls 2-1 After Tough Battle Against Villanova

The Fairfield University field hockey team came up short in their second road game in five days falling to Villanova by a score of 2-1 at The Villanova Field Hockey Field.  Hannah Pike had the lone goal for the Stags.

Villanova put in its first goal of the game with over nine minutes remaining in the first half when Megan Vermeil stepped in to take the shot off the penalty corner.  Both Francesca Bello and Ana Sherwood were awarded the assists after setting up the goal opportunity.

The Stags battled back to start the second half and in the 47th minute, they were awarded a penalty corner which would lead to their first score of the game.  Jaclyn Gallagher's first shot off the corner was blocked into the air and landed in front of her.  Her second attempt ricocheted in front of Jamie Appelberg who gave the assist to Hannah Pike for the equalizing goal.

With just over three minutes left in the contest, Abby Siana put a shot from the center of the circle past goalkeeper Caitlin Gilligan and into the goal sealing the tough loss for the Stags.  The goal was assisted by Allison Sayia.

The Stags finished the game with ten shots on goal forcing Villanova's goalkeeper to make eight saves.  Caitlin Gilligan finished the game with six saves.  The Wildcats managed 12 penalty corners to Fairfield's 8.

The Stags return to action on Saturday when they take on California at noon to finish up their three-game road trip.  The game will be played at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut.
