HAMDEN, Conn. The Fairfield University field hockey team battled through their third straight road game at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut just 35 minutes northeast of Fairfield. They took on California in the Quinnipiac Bobcat Tournament and put together a solid performance but ended up falling by a 3-1 count.
California tallied the first goal of the game when Megan Rodgers put in the assist from Janaye Sakkas in the 20
th minute of the first half, giving them a 1-0 advantage. With just under two minutes left in the half,
Emma Matlach scored her second goal of the season off an assist from
Jaclyn Gallagher. At halftime the teams were tied, 1-1.
The Stags stayed with the Bears early in the second half but the tie was broken when Gabi Jimenez put in the assist from Lindsay Mathison from the right corner. California put the game away in the 59
th minute when Megan Rodgers dribbled along the goal line and scored her second goal of the game.
Fairfield was out-shot by California 18-8 but had one more penalty corner than the Bears.
The Stags will travel back home to take on Dartmouth at University Field on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
