Biography

2020-21 Season: Emma Matlach scored a point in three of her six appearances during 2020-21 season, finishing the campaign with two goals and one assist. She picked up her first point with an assist in a 3-2 win against Hofstra, setting up the game-deciding goal in the third quarter. Matlach scored the game-winning goals in both Sacred Heart victories, beginning with the game’s only goal in an overtime decision in March. She followed up with the game’s first goal in a 5-0 win against the Pioneers in the regular-season finale. Matlach finished the season with 14 shots with five on goal.

2019 Season: Matlach continued to show her offensive skills with another successful season up front, scoring nine goals and adding one assist in her 19 appearances. She was another Stag who was highly effective off the bench. She gained two starts during the year which occurred consecutively at Vermont and at Wagner. She scored one goal as a starter, the Stags’ first goal in a 2-1 win over Villanova. She did not score in her first four appearances but rallied with at least one point in nine of her final 15 games. Matlach had one game in which she was in the scoring twice, securing a goal and an assist in a 3-1 win over Drexel. She also was responsible for one of the team’s three goals against American in the NCAA Championship opening round. Matlach tallied a game-winning goal against Providence, at Bryant, versus Rider, and against Sacred Heart in the NEC Tournament semifinals.

2018 Season: Matlach led all Fairfield scorers with 31 points, connecting on 12 goals and adding seven assists. She was responsible for five game-winning goals, deciding the Holy Cross, UMass Lowell, Lehigh, Bryant, and LIU Brooklyn games. She tallied at least one point in 12 of the team’s 21 games and put together a four-game scoring streak between October 5 and 14. She recorded eight points during that run, including a goal and an assist in a 5-4 setback at Columbia. Matlach earned a spot on the All-MAAC first team for her performance during the 2018 season.


2017: Played in 16 games, starting five. Scored two goals and added two assist for six points. Registered 15 shots on goal.

Before Fairfield: A midfielder from Hannover, Germany, Emma Matlach attended Kaiser Wilhelm and Ratsgymnasium for her high school education and played at the highest youth level of field hockey. She won 12 State Championships and made it to the Final 4 of the German National Championships while in the youth league.   In her first season at the women’s level, she made the first Bundesliga team at Hannover THC.  She was also an All-State Selection for four years.
