Madden’s Goal Lifts Stags Over Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. – In the 500th career match for the Fairfield University women's soccer team, it was a trio of rookies, appearing in just their fourth career match, that helped lead to the victory. Alex Madden's first career game-winner gave the Stags a 2-1 double overtime victory against Binghamton, snapping the Bearcats' four-game unbeaten streak. The tally was set up by freshman Liz Dumas driving the ball deep into the box and classmate Gabby Diodati tipping her cross to Madden.

"We put forth an outstanding team effort tonight and showed that we are a resilient group," Head Coach Jim O'Brien said. "We had too many players to mention who had outstanding performances which is why we got the win. Our two wins have been come from behind in the second overtime which shows the character of the team. We are getting better every day and it shows on game day."

"We battled from the first minute to the final play," Madden said. "We definitely deserved the win today. We have worked so hard and it has certainly paid off. I'm so happy and lucky to score the winner."

The play happened when Dumas crossed a ball right near the net where Diodati was waiting in the far corner and was able to get the tip to Madden, who finished in the corner of the net. The goal occurred with just three minutes remaining in the match, the second time the Stags were able to convert late.

On the first occasion, with the Stags (2-2) trailing 1-0 with 11 minutes remaining in regulation, Jenny Jacobs drove down the left side and was able to outrun her defender and take the ball deep towards the line. The extra time allowed Sara Plowman to sneak over to the far side and would eventually receive a cross from Jacobs and convert the opportunity. For Plowman and Jacobs, it marked the first points of the season.

Just like in the match against St. John's, Plowman was able to get the Stags best chances, forcing impressive saves from Binghamton goalkeeper Katie Hatziyianis. The junior also connected with Jacobs midway through the first half when Jacobs sent a cross to the middle of the box that Plowman was able to tip out of the air, but Hatziyianis made the point blank save.

On the defensive end, Megan DeFeo tallied a career-high nine saves in limiting Binghamton to one goal. That only tally came off the foot of their leading scorer, and West Virginia transfer Kayla Saagar who launched a ball 35-yards out into the upper corner. DeFeo made several impressive saves on the evening, including a point blank reaction save against Saagar's chance late in the match and tipping Patty Loonie's game-winning attempt in overtime over the crossbar.

In the match, the Stags were out-shot 19-12 and both teams had shots hit the crossbar. For the Stags, it was Jenn Wahlig's header on a free kick that tapped the bar.

The Stags will complete their upstate New York swing when they visit Syracuse on Sunday at 1pm.
