FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's soccer team fell to the St. John's Red Storm by a 2-0 score in the first home match of the season for the Stags. The Red Storm were paced with a goal in each half while goalkeeper Antonia Tammaro kept the Stags off the scoreboard finishing with four saves in her first start of the season.
The Stags (1-2) were the aggressor coming out of the gate, registering three corner kicks and two shots in the opening three minutes.
Sara Plowman had the best chance for the Stags as she attempted a floating shot to the top of the post, but Tammaro was able to leap after the shot and hit the ball over the crossbar. It was the first of two Plowman shots that forced impressive saves from the keeper, the other one coming late in the second half.
Freshman
Gabby Diodati had the other near chance as her low shot forced Tammaro to dive across her body to keep the game scoreless in the 20th minute.
The Red Storm weathered the Fairfield attack and struck for their first goal in the 41st minute when Connecticut native Shea Connors charged after the loose ball and after the Fairfield goalkeeper got a piece of the ball, Connors was able to dribble for an opening and score the first goal of the match.
St. John's added another mark in the second half off a strike from Christina Bellero to put the score at 2-0.
Both teams attempted 12 shots in the contest, with St. John's holding a slim 5-4 advantage with shots on goal. The Stags recorded five corner kicks in the evening compared to two for the Red Storm.
Fairfield will hit the road for their 500th varsity match when they take on Binghamton in Vestal, N.Y., on Friday at 7pm.
