FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University baseball game against NYIT scheduled for Tuesday has been canceled due to frozen ground and expected game time temperatures. Fairfield will travel to Yale on Wednesday for a doubleheader against the Yale Bulldogs starting at 3:30pm.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Gavin Wallace closed out the first MAAC series of 2016 with the best start of his career. In his first career conference start, Wallace went eight innings and allowed just one earned run while striking out six batters without issuing a walk. The offense behind Wallace gave the sophomore plenty of run support by recording 13 runs on 17 hits, and did so with contributions up and down their lineup. In fact, the number eight and nine hitters (Jack Gethings and Michael Conti) combined for seven hits, with four coming off the bat of the freshman Gethings. The rookie also drove in three runs which tied Jake Salpietro for the team lead.
FAIRFIELD VS NYIT: The Stags have dominated the all-time series with the Bears, holding a 12-1 record with their lone loss coming last season. In his career, Salpietro is 4-for-9 against the Bears with four runs scored. The senior began his career against NYIT with a seven RBI performance in 2014. Ryan O'Connor and Mike Bonaiuto both have starts in their career against NYIT.
THE BULLDOG SCOUTING REPORT: Yale opens up a six-game home stand and holds a 6-17-1 record, but nine of those losses came in the first 10 games. Nate Adams not only is at the top of the Bulldogs alphabetically, but also is tops on the team with a .409 batting average in his 13 starts. Fairfield Prep alum, Simon Whiteman leads the squad with 25 hits during his first 24 collegiate games. The pitching has been a problem for Yale as their staff holds a 7.21 ERA and allow hitters to bat .331 this season.
UP NEXT: Conference play continues when the Stags travel to Iona for a three-game series starting Saturday at noon.
