Men's Basketball Hosts Marist On Monday Night

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Fresh off its thrilling 84-80 double-overtime win against Quinnipiac, the Fairfield University men's basketball team will return to Webster Bank Arena for one of its two remaining home games. The Stags host Marist College on Monday night with the game time scheduled for 7 pm. The game will be broadcast on SNY and ESPN3.

This matchup will close out the season series between these two teams with Fairfield winning in Poughkeepsie on January 22 by an 88-76 score. Curtis Cobb and Tyler Nelson both scored 21 points in the contest with Jerome Segura setting a career-high with 11 assists. Fairfield holds a 31-24 edge in the overall series.

The Red Foxes look to improve on their 5-19 overall record this evening after falling to Manhattan at home 81-73 at home. Marist just completed a three-game home stand that resulted in a 1-2 record. The win on that home stand was a 79-73 decision over Siena which halted an 11-game losing streak, seven of which came on the road.

In its last game, Marist played Manhattan closely through the first half, using a 10-point run to close within a point at 20-19. The Red Foxes looked as though they would head into the locker room with the lead but a buzzer-beating three pointer gave the Jaspers a one-point edge, a lead they would not surrender the rest of the way. Freshman Brian Parker paced the offense with 19 points, the eighth time that he has led the team or shared the lead in scoring this year. Khallid Hart added 16 points to the Marist offense.

Hart has been a critical part of the Red Foxes' offense this year, leading the MAAC in scoring with a 21.2 scoring average. He is one of three conference student-athletes to average better than 20 points per game. Parker, a two-time MAAC rookie of the week, is the top scoring freshman in the MAAC with 16.7 points per game. He is also the team leader in rebounding (5.5 rpg) and assists (3.0 apg). Hart is the team's top long-range threat, averaging 2.8 three pointers per game.

The Stags will try for their 10th home win of the season this evening, winning three of their last four contests at Webster Bank Arena which includes an 80-70 decision over Manhattan on February 7. In those four games, the Stags averaged just over 80 points per game highlighted by a 98-point effort against Iona.

A trio of Stags have been successful during the run of four home games, namely Tyler Nelson (17.3 ppg), Marcus Gilbert (16.0 ppg), and Curtis Cobb (15.9 ppg). All three were instrumental in the team's win at Quinnipiac on Saturday. Cobb led all scorers with 19 points, including a three-point play at the end of the second overtime to seal the four-point win with eight seconds left. Matija Milin posted 18 points off the bench while Gilbert added 17 points. The game marked the 11th time that Fairfield reached the 80-point mark, winning all of those contests.

Gilbert remains the team's top scorer at 17.6 points per game, followed by Nelson (15.7 ppg) and Cobb (10.6 ppg). Jerome Segura, who dished off five assists against Quinnipiac, raised his season total to 130 (5.4 apg), ranking third in the MAAC.
