Fairfield Draws Saint Peter's

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The only statistic that is not going to show how much the Stags dominated this contest is the final score. Despite setting a Lessing Field record with 43 shots, only Brenna Brown's first half tally hit the back of the net and that was matched by Saint Peter's in the second frame which forced the Stags to take a 1-1 double overtime draw against the Peacocks. The Stags out-shot the Peacocks 43-7 and took 15 corner kicks compared to three for Saint Peter's.

It took Fairfield 29 minutes and 11 shots to get on the board first when Brown was able to finish off a cross sent from the right side by Alana Leahy to put the Stags up 1-0. Brown extended her team lead to five goals with the score while Leahy picked up her first collegiate point. That would be the fifth of a career-high 13 shots for Brown in the game, with five of those coming on target.

Despite pressuring shot after shot, the Stags were kept off the board by Saint Peter's goalkeeper Taylor McLean who was arguably the difference of the game. The junior netminder got stronger as the game went deeper, including notching diving saves off shots by Sara Plowman and Julia McGuire and a reflex stop on a tap by Anna Borea.

McLean was able to keep the Peacocks within striking distance waiting for a Fairfield mistake and that came in the 60th minute. A failed clear attempt found the foot of Kelsey Nugent who tapped the ball to the team's leading scorer Genesis Castrellon who notched her third goal of the season.

The Stags would take the final 11 shots of the game all in the final 15 minutes but McLean picked up the most athletic stops of her 15 saves during that span to force the game to go to extra time. In the overtime, Fairfield recorded five of the six shots in the final 20 minutes but none were on frame.

With the draw, the Stags run their unbeaten streak against the Peacocks to 26 games (24-0-2) with Saint Peter's picking up their first draw in the series since the 1995 MAAC Tournament. The Stags will look to extend their overall unbeaten streak to three matches when they travel to Marist on Saturday at 7pm.
