POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Brianna Robinson's goal with 44 seconds remaining in the first half was the first and only score of the game as the Fairfield University women's soccer team was edged 1-0 against Marist on the road.
Robinson's header concluded an offensive first half with both teams getting chances, forcing five combined saves from the two goalkeepers. Marist's Ashley Houghton made three of those stops, saving shots from Pamela Coufos, Melanie Hingher, and Brenna Brown, all of those coming in the first 25 minutes of the game. Megan DeFeo was also impressive in the first half, picking up two saves before surrendering the eventual game-winning goal.
The Stags did not take their first shot of the second frame until the 68th minute but would take nine of the game's final 11 shots during the remaining time. The first of those attempts nearly tied the game in dramatic fashion as Julia Kleczkowski took her first career shot and it rattled off the crossbar, the closest the Stags would come to finding the equalizer. Brown's opportunities in the 75th and 87th minute required saves from Houghton, capping off her five save performance. Fairfield took five shots in the final 10 minutes as they pressured the Marist's defensive line, but each attempt was off the mark.
Fairfield out-shot Marist 14-9 in the contests, and had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. A trio of Stags tied for the team lead with three shots with Brown, Coufos, and Sydney Arestivo each having three chances. All of Brown's three shots were on goal. Megan DeFeo picked up three saves in the match.
The Stags will now have a week off until they travel up to Niagara Falls for a match against Niagara on Saturday at 1pm.
