FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University swimming and diving teams both split Fordham and Monmouth on Friday night in New York. The men's side topped Monmouth 202-68, but fell to the host Rams 182-100. The women earned a 199-59 win over Monmouth, but lost 170-107 to Fordham.
For the women, Colleen Young had another stand out night in the pool with a pair of first-place finishes. In the 100y Breaststroke she finished first with a time of 1:09.70, then in the 200y Breaststroke she clocked a personal best time of 2:28.11. Sophomore Kelly Cordes turned in a solid performance with a second-place finish in the 200y Freestyle (2:00.39) and a third-place finish in the 500y Freestyle (5:22.11). Both were also a part of the 200y Medley Relay team that placed third along with Kristin Kunnapas and Meghan Guinee.
Freshman Harrison McGovern put together a strong night. In the 100y Breaststroke he swam a personal best time of 1:02.67, earning a third-place finish. Then in the 200y Breaststroke he earned another third-place finish with his second personal best of the night (2:18.90). Fellow classmate Griffin Burke had a good performance with a fourth-place finish in the 100y Backstroke (56.62) and second place finish and personal best time in the 200y Backstroke (2:02.77). Burke also had a hand in the 200y Medley Relay along with Jordan Rahurahu, Brendan Finnegan, and Andrew Tavcar that placed third.
In diving action, Jane Rice placed second in both events with a score of 230.78 in the 1-meter and a 228.45 in the 3-meter. Leah Pawelczyk placed right behind her in both events scoring 181.20 in the 1-meter and 186.75 in the 3-meter. Alex Shabecoff grabbed a pair of third place finishes, in the 1-meter he scored 208.65 and 196.35 in the 3-meter, both rewriting his personal bests.
Both teams are in action tomorrow as swimming faces the University of Bridgeport and Mount St. Mary, while the diving team hosts Bryant at the RecPlex Pool.
