Swimming and Diving Visit Iona

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University swimming and diving teams will compete in their final meet of the season at Iona on Saturday. The meet is scheduled for 1:00 pm and is the final competition before the MAAC Championships.

Last weekend, the men were unable to compete as winter storm Jonas forced them to postpone their meet with NJIT on Saturday. The women were able to take on Sacred Heart last Sunday; in a meet they lost 145.5-113.5.

Grace Goddard paced the Stags against the Pioneers with two individual victories. In the 1000y Freestyle she finished five seconds ahead of second place with a time of 11:25.25. Again in the 200y Butterfly she was five seconds ahead of the next best swimmer clocking in at 2:14.65. Senior Kelly Mulligan added a victory in the 200y Backstroke with a time of 2:13.28. She also placed second in the 100y Butterfly (1:04.86).

The men's team's last competition was on January 16 at St. Francis College in a meet they won 122-109. Individually, it was Connor Daly who posted victories in the 200y IM (2:01.84), 100y Butterfly (52.03), and 100y Breaststroke (1:00.29) for the Stags. Also posting a victory was Andrew Gormley in the 100y Backstroke (56.34).

Iona last competed on January 22 at Fordham, with both sides falling to the Rams. Freshman Jude Zamora was the only individual winner for Iona posting a time of 48.47 in the 100y Freestyle. Two Gaels posted personal bests with Christian Foti in the 1000y Freestyle and Bryan Veals in the 100y Breastsroke. The Iona women also posted a number of personal bests. Senior MaryEllen Mangione posted a personal best in the 100y Breaststroke and Elizabeth Kaczmarek swam a personal best in the 100y Breaststroke.

After Saturday, the Stags will have just under two weeks to prepare for the MAAC Championships which are set to begin on February 10.
