BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Fairfield University men's swimming & diving team opened action at the 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship last night at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center. The Stags will continue to challenge for a MAAC title this evening, with the final rounds starting at 6:00 p.m.
Junior Connor Daly clocked an ECAC qualifying 1:53.07 to place sixth overall in the A-Final of the 200y IM.
In the A-Final of the men's 3-meter diving, sophomore Daniel Pires posted a 292.45 to place second overall. In the B-Final, senior Evan Barr was the runner-up, with a 244.90. Will Sullivan was close behind in fourth, with a 214.45.
The men's 200y medley relay of Collin Hayes, Daly, Scott McGinty, and Jay Cook clocked a 1:35.00 to set a new program record. The previous program record of 1:36.64 was set by Paul Bimmler, Brian Friedlander, Andrew Robinson, and Greg Bellizzi on February 18, 2011.
The 800y freestyle relay of Daly, Andrew Robinson, Cook, and McGinty finished with a time of 6:55.27, setting a new program record. The previous program record of 7:00.34 was set by Cody Parker, Jay Cook, Paul Bimmler, and Tyler Conley on February 15, 2013.
The men's 200y freestyle relay of Cook, McGinty, Andrew Tavcar, and Hayes clocked a 1:25.95 to finish eighth overall.
The Stags continue action at the MAAC Championships tomorrow, February 13, with the preliminaries beginning at 10am.
Thursday's Preliminaries
Men's 500y Free: Andrew Robinson posted a 4:51.91finish while rookie Jameson Duncan followed at 4:53.92, for a personal best. Pat Orkins was close behind Duncan, clocking his own personal best 4:55.03.
Men's 200y IM: Junior Connor Daly clocked an ECAC qualifying 1:54.08 to place eighth overall and qualify for the finals.
Men's 50y Free: All five Stags posted personal best times in this event. Scott McGinty was the top finisher for Fairfield, clocking in at 21.74 seconds. Jay Cook followed at 21.96 seconds while Collin Hayes finished with a time of 22.10. Michael Capodanno clocked in at 22.37 while Robert Hansen finished with a time of 23.84.
Men's 3-Meter Diving: Three out of four Stags posted ECAC qualifying scores. Sophomore Daniel Pires posted a 287.85 to place fourth overall while senior Will Sullivan followed in 11th place, with a 204.50. Evan Barr was close behind in 12th, with a 192.55, while rookie Benjamin Martin posted a 150.35 at his first MAAC Championships.
