FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team hosts their first MAAC game as Monmouth comes to University Field for a 2:30 pm matchup on Saturday, October 10.
Fairfield (4-5) vs. Monmouth (3-9): The Stags are 10-3 all-time against the Hawks. The last matchup between the two sides was last season on September 26 when the Stags lost 4-3 in overtime. Saturday's game will be the first matchup as MAAC opponents.
A Look at the Hawks: Monmouth is 3-9 this season and has dropped its last four contests. Offensively the team is led by freshman forward Teresa Warner and senior midfielder Cori Allen. The freshman has a team leading six goals and 14 points this season. Allen is second with five goals and 12 points. Sophomore Christen Piersanti has started all 12 games in cage for Monmouth. She posts 58 saves and a 2.91 goals against average.
Last Time Out: Against Harvard on Saturday, the team dropped its first road contest of the season. The Stags were shutout for only the second time all season as they fell 4-0. Much of the game was controlled by Harvard and the scoring came early for the Crimson. Just under seven minutes into the game, Hannah Wellington scored for Harvard to give them a 1-0 lead.
In the 27th minute Harvard would tack on their second goal of the day, and Fairfield would head into the halftime break down two goals looking to turn things around.
Harvard quickly made the score 3-0 after Kathleen Young one-timed a Marissa Balleza pass right into an open net. It wouldn't take long for the Crimson to find their fourth goal as they scored in the 45th minute.
The Stags managed only six shots for the game against Harvard. The Crimson controlled the game firing 14 shots and taking seven penalty corners to just four for Fairfield.
Caitlin Bennett got the start in cage and played 55 minutes before Emma Singer took over to close the game out. Each keeper had one save on the day.
National Notice: Junior forward Ann Burgoyne sits tied for 23rd in the nation with 0.78 goals per game. Burgoyne has seven goals on the season thus far and leads the team in that category. Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Bennett also finds her name among the nation's best, ranking tied for 21st with 5.75 saves per game. Bennett has started eight games for the Stags recording 46 saves overall.
Looking Ahead: Fairfield will play their second MAAC contest when they travel to Rider on Friday, October 16 for a 7:00 pm game time.
