WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Stags took four of the final five shots in the game, but could not find the equalizer as they were edged by first-place Monmouth 2-1 on the Hawks' Senior Day. Rachel Ivanicki tallied the eventual deciding goal in the 51st minute, breaking the deadlock that held since Cassidy Boegel's tally midway in the first half.
Monmouth (11-2-2, 7-1 MAAC) opened the scoring in the 17th minute when the conference's leading scorer Erica Murphy one-timed a feed from Ivanicki for her 13th goal of the season.
The Stags (4-9-3, 1-4-2 MAAC) would answer right back when Karolyn Collins played a long free kick into the box that found the head of Boegel for her fourth score of the season. With that tally, Boegel is now tied for the team lead in goals (Collins and Brenna Brown have also tallied four scores this season).
The second half was as exciting and balanced as any soccer fan could ask for, as the stanza featured 18 shots (nine for each team), and 12 corner kicks (six from each side).
After the Ivanicki goal in the 51st minute, the Stags tested the Monmouth goalkeeper Sydney Lavan forcing the junior to make six saves in the second stanza. Elena Santos had two shots on target in the second frame Collins, Boegel, and Holly Habyan also had attempts that were stopped by Lavan.
Four of the nine shots that Fairfield collected in the period came in the final six minutes of the contest. Collins' final opportunity with 40 seconds left in the contest was stopped by Lavan and sealed the win for Monmouth.
Statistically, the contest was as close as you imagine. Monmouth narrowly out-shot the Stags 17-14 and both teams had seven corner kicks in the match. Lavan collected seven saves on the night while Jenna Pike had five. With the loss, the Stags now fall to ninth place in the MAAC standings, five points behind Siena for sixth-place and a playoff spot. With the win, Monmouth has now won seven of their last eight contests and remains unbeaten at home this season.
Fairfield will play in the final home game of the 2015 season when they host in-state rival Quinnipiac on Wednesday at 7pm.
