FAIRFIELD, Conn. – It's been the unfortunate motto all season long, the Stags just can't catch a break. Tonight, Quinnipiac's Jess Fontaine tapped a ball that had squeaked past a row of defenders to tie the match at 1-1 with just over six minutes left in the contest. That would be the final score, as the Stags took their fourth draw of the season, finishing a 1-1 tie against the Bobcats.
Brenna Brown got the Stags (4-9-4, 1-4-3 MAAC) started quickly as she headed a free kick sent into the box by Karolyn Collins for her team-leading fifth goal of the season. That score would stick for over 83 minutes, despite the Bobcats tallying nearly 12 shots up until that point. Eleven of those attempts came in the first half, but Jenna Pike, who has progressed her game in her year as the starting goalkeeper, stopped seven shots in the first stanza, just one shy of a career-high.
The Stags allowed just two Quinnipiac (7-7-1, 3-4-1 MAAC) shots in the second frame, however, one of those touched the back of the net. Nicole Eriksen grounded a ball to the far post, which Fontaine was able to tap in for her fifth goal of the season. That tied the contest at 1-1 in the 84th minute.
Fairfield had a chance to take the lead, and maybe cement the game when Brown found herself in a 1v1 situation and unleashed a shot destined for the right side of the net. However, Bobcats' keeper Natalia Grodzki was able to make a diving save when she was just a few feet away from the ball.
The Bobcats had the majority of the chances in the overtime period with four shots and four corner kicks.
In total, the Stags out-shot their in-state rival 20-13 and edged them in corner kicks (6-5).
This draw concludes the home portion of the 2015 season for the Stags, who will now head to Rider for a match on Saturday at 1pm.
