Women's Tennis Defeats Niagara, 5-2, for Third MAAC Win

NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University women's tennis team defeated Niagara University, 5-2, this evening at the SportsPlex. The win lifted the Stags to a 3-1 conference record.

In the No. 2 spot, Sharissa Ryan and Victoria Pirrello defeated Niagara's Maria Ortiz and Iva Celan, 8-4, while Allison Radde and Kaila Nelson downed the Purple Eagles' Ashley Ta and Jenna McCune, 8-2, in the No. 3 spot. At No. 1 doubles, Monica Yajima and Carolina Koladzyn were leading Sarah Hellstern and Paulina Velasquez, 6-4, when the match was called.

The Stags continued the winning streak into singles play. In the No. 1 spot, Yajima defeated Niagara's Ta, 6-3, 6-0, while Ryan clipped Hellstern, 6-3, 6-0, in the No. 2 spot. Fairfield also picked up wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles where Nelson downed Celan, 6-0, 6-1, and Pirrello edged McCune, 6-0, 6-2. In the No. 3 spot was Radde, who battled but ultimately fell, 3-6, 6-0, 10-8, to the Purple Eagles' Velasquez. Rounding out singles play for Fairfield was Koladzyn who was edged by Niagara's Ortiz, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.

Fairfield (6-7) will continue action on the road. The Stags will stop at Monmouth on April 8 before returning home to host Manhattan on April 10.
