Women?s Tennis Opens Action at MAAC Championships Saturday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield women's tennis team is on their way to compete in the 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship this weekend at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J. The Stags finished the regular season with an overall record of 11-9, and a conference mark of 7-1, which earned the No. 2 seed. Fairfield will face third-seeded Niagara University at 2pm during Saturday's semifinal round.

This is the first time in three years that the two teams will meet in the semifinal round. In the MAAC finals, the Stags defeated the Purple Eagles in the 2009 MAAC Championship. During the 2014 regular season, Fairfield topped Niagara (13-7; 6-2 MAAC), 5-2, in Niagara University, N.Y.

Fairfield's singles and doubles play has helped them earn their seventh consecutive MAAC Championship berth. The Stags finished 37-11 in conference singles play, with standouts Monica Yajima and Sharissa Ryan posting 7-1 MAAC records. Heading into the tournament, Ryan leads the team with an eight-match win streak while Allison Radde enters with a four-match win streak. In doubles play, the Stags posted an 18-5 conference record with standout duo of Radde and Kaila Nelson making a 4-1 mark in MAAC doubles.

Last season, Fairfield earned the No. 1 seed in the 2013 MAAC Championship. They defeated fourth-seeded Loyola, 4-1, in the semifinal match before falling to second-seeded Marist, 4-1, in the championship match.

Top-seeded Quinnipiac (11-10; 8-0 MAAC) will take on fourth-seeded Marist (6-9; 5-3 MAAC) in the other semifinal match on Saturday. The winners of the two semifinal matches will face one another in the Championship on Sunday, April 27.
