FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's tennis team was edged by Sacred Heart University, 5-2, this afternoon at the Sacred Heart Tennis Courts. Senior Sharissa Ryan and junior Allison Radde posted singles victories for the Stags.
Ryan picked up a win at No. 2 singles by defeating Sacred Heart's Gabriela Kaldan, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Radde outlasted the Pioneers' Lindsey Post, 6-0, 6-7(6), 14-12.
At No. 1 doubles, Sacred Heart's Post and Paige Olson posted an 8-7(5) victory over Monica Yajima and Radde while Katie DeRienzo and Nicole Rydzewski picked up an 8-7(3) win over Ryan and Victoria Pirrello in the No. 2 spot. At No. 3 doubles, rookies Kaila Nelson and Karen McKeough edged the Pioneers' Kaldan and Taylor Gurda, 8-6.
After winning the doubles point, Sacred Heart's DeRienzo recorded a, 6-2, 6-1, win at No. 1 singles over Yajima. The Pioneers took the lead when Nelson was edged by Olson, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 4 spot. Sacred Heart sealed the win at No. 5 singles when Rydzewski topped Pirrello, 6-4, 6-3. Rounding out singles play was McKeough who was clipped, 6-4, 6-4, by Gurda in the No. 6 spot.
The Stags (9-8) return to action on April 17 when they host Hartford on the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts. The first phase of construction on the Rafferty Stadium project has gotten underway. Due to the construction, the Walsh Athletic Center Parking Lot will be closed. Fans are asked to utilize the parking lots at Dolan Commons, Fairfield Prep, the rear of Alumni Hall, and Jogues Hall when they visit Stags Country for a game.
