Women's Lacrosse Hosts Vermont on Saturday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team will host the University of Vermont on Saturday, March 8 as the Stags "Faceoff For A Cause" as a Proud Supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project. The game is set for noon on Alumni Field.
 
The Stags will be holding a silent auction and collecting donations. With a donation of $15, fans will receive a specially designed hat or a t-shirt for the event, while supplies last. Fans can also bid on a variety of silent auction items including: a PS4 gaming system, a GoPro Camera, a Bose SoundDock®, a signed hockey stick by New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, a jersey signed by the USA Women's Lacrosse World Cup Team, tickets for the New York Giants and the New York Yankees, a weekend getaway package to Saratoga Springs, a Vineyard Vines gift basket, and more. All items were donated by family and friends of the lacrosse programs and all funds raised go directly to the Wounded Warrior Project.
 
About the Wounded Warrior Project: The Wounded Warrior Project was established 10 years ago to honor and empower Wounded Warriors. The project's purpose is to raise awareness and to enlist the public's aid for the needs of injured service members; to help injured servicemen and women aid and assist each other; and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs. Tens of thousands of wounded service members, family members, and caregivers receive support each year through WWP programs.

Fairfield (2-2) vs. Vermont: The two teams last met on April 13, 2002 with the Stags notching a 17-6 win. Fairfield is 5-1 all-time against Vermont. The Catamounts' lone win came on March 23, 1997 in the first-ever meeting between the programs. Since then, the Stags are currently on a five-game streak, having posted victories in their last five meetings with the Catamounts.
 
A Look at the Catamounts: Vermont is 5-0 on the season so far. The Catamounts have posted victories over Colgate, Marist, Siena, LIU Brooklyn, and Howard. Vermont returns standouts Sydney Mas and Jessica Roach.  Last season, Mas scored 50 goals with 10 assists for a total of 60 points while Roach tallied 32 goals with 19 assists to total 51 points. So far this year, Mas is the Catamounts' leading scorer, tallying 19 goals. Goalkeepers Meg Hopkins and Mackenzie Maher have split time in the net for Vermont. This season, Hopkins has tallied 26 saves with a save percentage of .491 while Maher has tallied 16 saves with a save percentage of .696.
 
Last Time Out: The Stags defeated Lehigh, 7-5, on March 4 at University Field in Fairfield, Conn. Senior captain Melanie Raso scored four goals for the Stags, who also received goals from Julieanne Mascera, Jamie Leoneand Riley Hellstein. Lehigh had a lead until 13:41 in the second half, when the Stags tied the game at 5-5. A fourth goal by Raso and a first collegiate goal netted off a free position shot by Hellstein sealed a 7-5 win for Fairfield. Sophomore Chelsey Sidaras tallied one save.
 
Looking Ahead: Fairfield will take action on the road, stopping at New Hampshire on March 14 followed by UConn on March 22.
