Women?s Tennis Opens Spring Season on Saturday

Women's Tennis Hosts Lafayette Tomorrow

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's tennis team will host Lafayette on Saturday, March 8 at the Stamford Indoor Tennis Club in Stamford, Conn. The first serve is set for 7pm.
 
Fairfield (3-4) vs. Lafayette: Saturday's match will be the first time the Stags and the Leopards have faced one another in dual play since February 25, 2012. In that match, Fairfield swept Lafayette, 7-0, in Easton, Pa. The Stags and the Leopards have already met this season at the St. Joseph's Invitational on September 27-29. At the Invitational, Fairfield duo Victoria Pirrello and Karen McKeough defeated  Lafayette's Lucy Bass and Jordyn Spellberg, 8-3, while Stags pair Karly Laliberte and Stephanie Ziegler fell to the Leopards' Tori Almeida and Lauren Tracy, 8-2.
 
A Look at the Leopards: Lafayette is 2-0 on the season. The Leopards have posted victories over Wagner and St. Peter's. In their fall season, Lafayette competed in two tournaments including the St. Joseph's Invitational and the Patriot League Kickoff. The Leopards are coming off a 6-1 win over St. Peter's on March 1.
 
Last Time Out: The Stags fell to UConn, 7-0, on March 5 at the Manchester Racquet Club in Manchester, Conn. In the No. 1 singles spot, senior Monica Yajima fell to the Huskies' Srna Stosljevic, 6-2, 6-4. At No. 2 singles, Sharissa Ryan was edged by UConn's Emma Alderman, 6-3, 2-6, 10-5. In the No. 3 spot, Allison Radde fell to the Huskies' Maxene Weinberg, 6-2, 7-6. Kaila Nelson was clipped by Lucy Nutting, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 4 spot while McKeough fell to UConn's Shea Flanagan, 6-0, 6-1, in the No. 5 spot. Rounding out singles play for the Stags was Pirrello who was edged by Jennifer Learmonth, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. 
 
Looking Ahead: Fairfield will continue action at home. The Stags will open play on the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts on March 19 as they host Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent Quinnipiac University at 3pm.
