Women's Tennis Faces UConn for Wednesday Matchup

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's tennis team will travel to Manchester, Conn. to compete against UConn on Wednesday, March 5 at the Manchester Racquet Club. The first serve is set for 1pm.
 
Fairfield (3-3) vs. UConn: Wednesday's match will be the first dual that Fairfield and UConn have played against one another since March 17, 2011. In that contest, the Stags fell to the Huskies, 4-2, at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts in Fairfield, Conn. The Stags and the Huskies have already met this season at the Sacred Heart Doubles Festival on September 7. At the Festival, Fairfield duo Monica Yajima and Allison Radde defeated UConn's duo Maxie Weinberg and Emma Alderman, 8-1, at the No. 1 spot while Sharissa Ryan and Victoria Pirrello defeated Lucy Nutting and Srna Stosljevic, 8-5, at the No. 2 spot. The Stags' rookie pair of Kaila Nelson and Karen McKeough fell to the Huskies' Shea Flanagan and Jen Learmouth, 8-4, in the No. 3 spot while Holly Ream and Stephanie Ziegler fell to UConn's Natalie Robson and Marie Gargiulo, 8-3, in the No. 4 spot.
 
A Look at the Huskies: UConn is 1-6 on the season so far. The Huskies have posted a victory over Quinnipiac and have fallen to Massachusetts, Stony Brook, Army, St. John's, Cincinnati, and James Madison. In their fall season, UConn competed in five tournaments including the Sacred Heart Doubles Festival, Quinnipiac Invitational, Army Invitational, Women's College Invitational, and Regional Championships. The Huskies are coming off a 4-3 loss to James Madison on March 1.
 
Last Time Out: The Stags fell to the Seton Hall Pirates, 4-0, on March 1 at the Mountainside Tennis Center. At No. 2 doubles, Stags duo Ryan and Pirrello were edged by Pirates' duo Hannah Liljekvist/Madison Shoemaker, 8-6, while the Fairfield pair of Carolina Koladzyn and Nelson fell to Seton Hall's Julia Keenan and Julie Martiny, 8-4, in the No. 3 spot. In the No. 1 spot, Yajima and Radde were facing the Pirates' Rocio Portela and Chloe Sher when the match was called. At No. 1 singles, Yajima fell to Sher, 6-0, 6-3, while Nelson fell to Keenan, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 4 spot. In the No. 5 spot, Koladzyn was edged by Shoemaker, 6-0, 6-2. Rounding out singles play for Fairfield in the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 6 spots were Ryan, Radde, and Pirrello, all of whose matches were unfinished.
 
Looking Ahead: Fairfield will continue action at home. The Stags will host Lafayette on March 8 at the Stamford Indoor Tennis Club in Stamford, Conn. before returning to the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts to host conference foe Quinnipiac on March 19.
