Women's Tennis Edges Providence College, 4-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Fairfield University women's tennis team edged Providence College, 4-3, in dual match play at the Peterson Recreation Center this afternoon.
 
Seniors Monica Yajima and Sharissa Ryan posted singles and doubles victories, lifting the Stags to a 2-2 overall record. 

Yajima picked up the win at No. 1 singles by defeating Providence's Maria Bernardez, 6-3, 6-4. At No. 2 singles, Ryan pulled out a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alana Prinos.
 
At No. 1 doubles, Yajima and Allison Radde picked up a 6-1 win over the Friars' duo Bernardez and Hannah Zangari while Ryan and Victoria Pirrello posted a 6-4 victory over Providence's Prinos and Jennifer DeLuca at the second spot. At No. 3 doubles, freshman duo Kaila Nelson/Karen McKeough were playing the Friars' Olivia Hogan/Amanda Pitocco, when the match was called.
 
At No. 3 singles, Radde was edged by Providence's DeLuca, 6-5 (7-4), 6-2. The Stags sealed the win at No. 4 singles when Nelson topped Karen Ramirez, 6-2, 6-3. Rounding out singles play for Fairfield was Pirrello who fell, 6-4, 6-1, to the Friars' Zangari while McKeough dropped, 6-3, 6-0, to Providence's Hogan at the six spot.
 
Fairfield returns to action on February 21 when the Stags host Villanova at the Stamford Indoor Tennis Club in Stamford, Conn. at 8pm.
