Women's Tennis Hosts Villanova on Friday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's tennis team will host Villanova University on Friday, February 21 at the Stamford Indoor Tennis Club in Stamford, Conn. First serve is set for 8pm.
 
Fairfield vs. Villanova: Friday's match will be the first dual the Stags and the Wildcats have played against one another since last year's match on March 26. In that contest, Fairfield fell to Villanova, 4-2, at the Villanova Tennis Complex in Villanova, Pa. Monica Yajima defeated Mikelle Mancini, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3, in the No. 1 spot. Fairfield and Villanova have already met this season at the Saint Joseph's Invitational on September 27-29. Carolina Koladzyn fell to the Wildcats' Linley Busby, 6-1, 2-6, 10-5, while rookie Kaila Nelson won after Villanova's Nicole Coons retired.
 
A Look at the Wildcats: Villanova is 0-2 on the season so far. The Wildcats have fallen to Richmond and Navy. In their fall season, Villanova competed in three tournaments including the Bucknell Invitational, Saint Joseph's Invitational, and the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational. The Wildcats are coming off a 6-1 loss to Navy on February 1.  
 
Last Time Out: The Stags defeated the Providence Friars, 4-3, on February 8 at the Peterson Recreation Center in Providence, R.I. Yajima picked up the win at No. 1 singles by defeating Providence's Maria Bernardez, 6-3, 6-4. At No. 2 singles, Sharissa Ryan pulled out a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alana Prinos. At No. 1 doubles, Yajima and Allison Radde picked up a 6-1 win over the Friars' duo Bernardez and Hannah Zangari while Ryan and Victoria Pirrello posted a 6-4 victory over Providence's Prinos and Jennifer DeLuca at the second spot. At No. 3 singles, Radde was edged by Providence's DeLuca, 6-5 (7-4), 6-2. The Stags sealed the win at No. 4 singles when Nelson topped Karen Ramirez, 6-2, 6-3. Rounding out singles play for Fairfield was Pirrello who fell, 6-4, 6-1, to the Friars' Zangari while McKeough dropped, 6-3, 6-0, to Providence's Hogan at the six spot.
 
Looking Ahead: Fairfield (2-2) will take action on the road, stopping at Seton Hall on March 1 followed by UConn on March 5.
