CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Fairfield University sophomores Ann Burgoyne and Caitlin Bennett earned America East weekly honors as announced by the conference on Monday, November 3. Burgoyne was named America East Player of the Week while Bennett captured the America East Defensive Player of the Week title.
Burgoyne scored two out of three goals for Fairfield, including the game-winner, in the Stags' 3-2 overtime win over UMass Lowell on October 31. The last regular-season victory clinched a third-consecutive America East Tournament berth for the program.
In the contest against UMass Lowell, Burgoyne, the Stags' leading scorer, broke the program record for single season points with 39. The previous single season record of 38 points was set by teammate Felicitas Heinen in 2012 and tied by her in 2013. Burgoyne is currently ranked among the nation's statistical leaders in two categories. She ranks fifth in goals per game (1.06) and 11th in points per game (2.17).
This season, Burgoyne has 39 points in her 18 appearances in the form of 19 goals and one assist. She has tallied 38 shots on goal and earned a shot on goal percentage of .792. Burgoyne has started in 16 games for the Stags and has tallied three game-winning goals.
Bennett earned the honor after tallying 12 saves in the win over UMass Lowell and earning a save percentage of .875. She has helped the Stags rank 19th nationally for saves per game (6.56) and 20th in save percentage (.752).
This season, Bennett has tallied 63 saves in her 14 appearances in goal for the Stags. She has clocked 823:51 in the net and has started in 13 contests this year. Bennett has earned an overall save percentage of .708 and a goals against average of 2.84.
The Fairfield University field hockey team owns a regular season record of 7-11 for the 2014 campaign with a 2-3 mark in America East play. Fairfield will travel to Albany, N.Y. to face first-seeded No. 12 Albany in the conference tournament semifinal round on Thursday, November 6 at 1pm.
