PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Fairfield University women's tennis team matched up against Delaware, Lafayette, Villanova, Saint Francis University, Temple, Drexel, Loyola Maryland, and host Saint Joseph's at the 2013 Saint Joseph's Invitational this past weekend. The three-day event took place at the SJU Tennis Complex and Finnesey Courts.
In flight 1 singles, three-time MAAC Player of the Year
Monica Yajima battled to the finals. In the first round, Yajima defeated Temple's Mavrina 6-2, 6-1. She advanced after defeating Saint Joseph's Eisenbrand, 6-3, 6-0, but fell to the host's Davis, 6-0, 7-6 (3), in the final round. Also in flight 1 singles, was
Sharissa Ryan who fell in her first round to the flight one champion from Saint Joseph's.
In flight 2 singles, Fairfield's
Carolina Koladzyn and
Allison Radde fell short in their first rounds. Despite being edged by Villanova's Busby, 6-1, 2-6, 10-5, Koladzyn battled back to win the flight 2 consolation draw championship. In her first consolation round, she defeated Loyola's Krawiec, 6-4, 6-4. Koladzyn advanced on a walk over by Lafayette's Almeida, to continue on and beat Saint Joseph's Jadeja, 6-1, 7-6 (5), in the championship.
In flight 3 singles, rookies
Kaila Nelson and
Karen McKeough dropped to opponents from Temple and Saint Joseph's in their first round. Nelson continued in the consolation draw to defeat Saint Joseph's Devlin and Villanova's Coon, before falling to Saint Francis University's Jentz, 6-3, 6-3, in the finals. Rounding out singles play for the Stags in flight 4 were
Stephanie Ziegler and
Karly Laliberte.
Koladzyn and Yajima were the standout duo for the Stags in flight 1 doubles play, making it to the semifinals. The pair defeated Saint Joseph's Jadeja/Mulquin, 8-4, to advance to the second round where they beat Temple's Doms/Nussaume, 8-5. In the semifinals, the duo fell to Delaware's Safron/Lai, 8-6.
Fairfield's other doubles teams included Radde/Ryan and McKeough/Nelson who went 1-1 for the day. Stags duo Laliberte/Ziegler dropped in the first round.
The Fairfield women's tennis team will return to the courts on October 18-20 for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional in Cambridge, Mass.
