For the second time in as many games Ashley Small (Melville, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal, giving the Fairfield University women's soccer team a 1-0 win over visiting American University. The Stags improve to 2-3-0 on the year while the Eagles fall to 2-5-0 on the season.

Small fed the ball to Erin Pettersen (Massapequa, N.Y.) who was promptly challenged by a defender, just outside the box. Small came from behind and took the ball of the defenders foot and went at the cage, beating Sarah Dejak (Pinehurst, N.C.) to the far post, 2:43 into the game.

Kathleen Early (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) made three stops in the net for Fairfield to earn her first clean sheet of the season. Dejak went on to make 11 saves for the Eagles, including two point-blank stops in the final minutes.

The Stags controlled play for most of the game, earning an 18-7 edge in total shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kick chances. Fairfield was whistled for four fouls, while American was called four nine.

The contest was the second of the 2013 Fairfield University Women's Soccer Invitational. The opening game, between The College of the Holy Cross and the University of Hartford, ended scoreless double-overtime draw. Delayed 35 minutes by lightening in the first-half, saw Hartford outshoot Holy Cross 16-8. Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.) made six saves in net for the Crusaders, while Jessica Jurg (Annen, The Netherlands) stopped five.

The tournament concludes on Sunday when American takes on Hartford at 11 a.m. and Fairfield hosts Holy Cross at 2 p.m.
