Baseball Plays Final Non-League Game At Quinnipiac


Weekly Notes

Fairfield, winners of five of its last six games, will play its final non-league game on May 14 when it travels to Quinnipiac. First pitch is set for 1pm.

Fairfield (17-28) vs. Quinnipiac (14-34): Fairfield and Quinnipiac will complete the home and home series on Tuesday. The two teams last met on March 26 at Alumni Diamond with the Stags posting a 10-4 victory. In that game, Ryan Plourde drove in three runs and was one of four Stags to have multi-hit games. Plourde was 2-for-5 while rookie Jake Salpietro went 2-for-5 with a double, a stolen base, two runs scored and two RBI. Junior Rob LoPinto went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, one driven in, and a stolen base. Christian Fox picked up the win after a solid relief effort after checking into the fourth inning and staving off a Bobcat rally. Fox went 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk with a strikeout. Sophomore Andrew Gallagher threw a perfect 2.1 innings of relief with a two strikeouts while Ian Tresser closed out the ninth. Freshman Aaron Howell received the no-decision in his second start of the year in which he went 3.1 innings. The Stags have taken seven straight meetings from the Bobcats and are 19-12 all-time against them. Quinnipiac's last victory over Fairfield was a 3-0 win on April 24, 2008.

A Look at the Bobcats: Quinnipiac dropped three of four games to Central Connecticut over the weekend. Two Bobcats swung hot bats in the series, however, as Tom Donovan led the Bobcats with a .583 (7-12) average while Brian Ruditys hit .571 (8-14) with two RBI and three runs scored. Ruditys is batting .262 (45-172) with four doubles, 15 RBI, and 21 runs scored this season. Scott Donaghue is hitting a team-high .305 with 35 RBI this season.

Fairfield Among the MAAC Leaders: As a team, Fairfield leads the league in pick-offs (14), is third in sacrifice hits (41), fourth in fielding double plays (41), stolen bases (55), triples (8), and on-base percentage (.279), and fifth in batting average (.261), ERA (4.85), and homers (9). Individually, outfielder Ryan Plourde is fourth in batting average (.361), third in on-base percentage (.469), and tied for second in triples (4) and walks (30). First baseman Anthony Hajjar is tied for fourth in the league in doubles (14) and tied for first in double plays turned (39). Sal Ciccone and Mike Bennett are tied for third and fourth, respectively, in sacrifice hits while pitcher EJ Ashworth is fifth in ERA (2.80).
