FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's tennis team fell to Stony Brook University this afternoon, 7-0.
The Stags began their Sunday play by dropping each of the doubles matches. At No. 2 doubles,
Sharissa Ryan and
Allison Radde battled with Shtilkind/Dix but came up short, 8-4. Fairfield duos of Yajima/Koladzyn and Pirrello/McLaughlin each fell to their opponents, 8-2.
In singles play, the Stags were unable to capture a game.
Monica Yajima and Radde were the only two on the squad to tally games in both sets. Yajima fell at No. 1 singles to Nini Lagvilava, 6-2, 6-3, while Radde dropped, 6-1, 6-2, to Becky Shtilkind. Ryan and Pirrello were each blanked by their opponents as
Carolina Koladzyn was topped, 6-1, 6-0, and the Seawolves' Chloe Pike beat
Nikki Jackson, 6-2, 6-0.
The Stags finish the regular season as MAAC Regular Season Co-Champions with an overall record of 10-8 and a 6-1 mark in conference play. The title marks the women's fifth consecutive regular season title, and the program's twelfth all-time. The Stags will share the title with Niagara University and Marist College who also finished 6-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
The three teams, along with Loyola Maryland, will travel to West Windsor, N.J. next weekend for the 2013 MAAC Championship Tournament. The Stags will be defending their 2012 Championship title and playing for an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.
