POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University baseball team dropped a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Marist College this afternoon at McCann Field. The Red Foxes followed up a 4-2 victory in the opener with a 6-3 win in the second game.
Freshman
Jake Salpietro was a combined 3-for-5 with two walks, a stolen base, a run scored, and an RBI on the day while sophomore
Alex Witkus was a combined 3-for-6 with two runs scored and a stolen base for the Stags.
In the first game, Marist took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Mike Orefice. Fairfield tied it up in the top of the third on an RBI single by Junior
Rob LoPinto but the Red Foxes got the run back in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI double by Zach Shank. Marist added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend its lead to 4-1. In the top of the eighth, Witkus led off with a single and moved over to third on a single by Senior
Jack Giannini. With one out, Witkus crossed the plate on a groundball off the bat of
Anthony Hajjar to make the score 4-2. Marist, however, was able to fend off the Stags for the win.
Chris Bielak (4-1) went 7.0 innings in the win, scattering two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six batters while Kevin McCarthy notched his fourth save of the year by retiring the final six batters of the game. Freshman
Mike Wallace (3-3) took the loss for the Stags, going 7.0 innings, allowing four runs, three earned. Sophomore
Andrew Gallagher threw an inning of relief, striking out two batters.
Marist (17-12; 8-3 MAAC) started the scoring in the second game as well, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Nick McQuail. The Stags countered in the top of the fourth inning with a three-run effort.
Ryan Plourde led off with a single, advanced to second on a groundout, and then scored on a single by Salpietro.
Mike Bennett followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Freshman
Brendan Tracy successfully executed a squeeze allowing Salpietro to score.
Sal Ciccone then made it 3-1 with an RBI double to score Bennett. The Red Foxes answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth inning to go on top, 4-3, and added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Marist's Brett Houseal (6-3) notched the win, scattering three runs on six hits and three walks over 5.2 innings of work. McCarthy recorded his second save of the day by going 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three. Sophomore
Jeremy Soule (1-6) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits and four walks.
Plourde reached base in both games, extending his on-base streak to 29 games.
Fairfield (10-19; 3-8 MAAC) and Marist will play the series finale tomorrow, April 14, at 12pm at McCann Field.
