Baseball Falls To Miami University 12-3

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. –
The Miami University baseball team broke a stalemate in the top of the eighth inning, and went on to a 12-3 victory over Fairfield University this afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park.
 
Senior Anthony Hajjar went 3-for-4 while senior Jack Giannini had a hit to extend his on-base streak to 22 games. Sophomore Sal Ciccone went 4-for-4 against Miami.
 
The RedHawks got on the board in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by Jake Romano. The Stags countered in the bottom half of the inning by pushing two runs across the plate. Hajjar was hit by a pitch to lead off the stanza while Giannini reached on an error. Mike Bennett then stepped to the plate and delivered a single to right center to score Hajjar and Giannini.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, Fairfield struck again. Hajjar doubled and came around to score on a single by Giannini to make it a 3-1 advantage for the Stags.  Miami scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI double by Kevin Bower and a two-out RBI double by Scott Slappey to tie the game.
 
Miami broke the stalemate in the top of the eighth inning with a three-run effort for the 6-3 advantage. The RedHawks broke the game open in top of the ninth inning by scoring six runs.
 
Sophomore EJ Ashworth received the no-decision after a solid outing. Ashworth went 6.0 innings, scattering three runs on nine hits. Senior Kyle Capaldo took the loss after being charged with all three Miami runs in the eighth.
 
Fairfield (3-5) continues action at the RussMatt Tournament tomorrow, March 11, against Bucknell University at 6pm.
