Women's Tennis Closes Out Fall Season with NJIT Invitational

NEWARK, N.J. - The Fairfield University women's tennis team matched up against Albany, Fairleigh Dickinson, Marist, Rhode Island, Sacred Heart, Saint Joseph's, Saint Peter's College, Seton Hall, and host Highlanders at the 2013 NJIT Invitational this past weekend. The three-day event took place at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.

In Flight A singles, Carolina Koladzyn fell to Fairleigh Dickinson's Ksenjia Tihomirova, 6-4, 6-1, in the first round. Sharissa Ryan also fell in her first round to the Knights' Shreya Pasricha, 6-1, 6-1. In the Flight A backdraw, Koladzyn and Ryan were edged by opponents from Sacred Heart in their first rounds.

In Flight B singles, Allison Radde was the standout for the Stags. In the first round, Radde defeated Kelly Mulquin from Saint Joseph's University, 6-2, 6-3. In the second round, Radde fell to Fairleigh Dickinson's Gisela Castany, 6-3, 6-0. Also competing in Flight B for the Stags was Victoria Pirrello. Pirrello fell in her first round to NJIT's Carolina Zanotta, 6-3, 6-3. In the Flight B backdraw, Pirrello was edged by Saint Joseph's Arianne Polatnick, 6-4, 6-4, in her first round.

In Flight C singles, rookie Kaila Nelson had a good showing for the Stags. Nelson defeated Paige Olson from Sacred Heart in the first round before falling to Albany's Cheryl Kukkonen, 6-1, 6-3, in the second round. Also in Flight C singles was Karen McKeough. McKeough fell in her first round to Marist's Marielle Campbell, 6-3, 6-1. In the Flight C backdraw, McKeough was edged by host Highlanders' Nathalie Habegger, 6-2, 6-1, in her first round.

In Flight D, both Holly Ream and Stephanie Ziegler fell in their first rounds. In the Flight D backdraw, Ream defeated Sacred Heart's Haley Dubits, 8-4, while Ziegler won by default against Elena Melian from Saint Peter's College.

Koladzyn/Pirrello was the standout duo for the Stags, making it to the second round in Flight 1 doubles. The pair defeated Rhode Island's Chernykh/Sadovnikova, 8-2, in the first round before falling to Seton Hall's Keenan/Landert, 8-0, in the second round. Also competing in Flight 1 doubles was Fairfield duo Ryan/Radde who fell to Fairleigh Dickinson's Pasricha/Chris, 8-6, in the first round. In the Flight 1 doubles backdraw, the pair defeated Sacred Heart's Kaldan/Gurda, 8-5, before defeating duo Halagian/Radovic, 8-2, from Saint Peter's College.

In Flight 2 doubles, Fairfield duo McKeough/Nelson also had a good showing. The pair defeated Marist's Carlay/ Eastman, 8-7(6), to advance to the second round where they fell to Albany's Torres/Hermans, 8-1.

Fairfield's other doubles team included Ream/Ziegler who went 1-1 for the day in Flight 3.

The Fairfield women's tennis team will return to the courts to open their spring campaign on January 24, 2014 when they face St. John's University in Queens, N.Y.
