Women's Tennis Travels to NJIT Invitational this Weekend



FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's tennis team will close their 2013 fall campaign at the NJIT Invitational in Newark, N.J. on October 25-27.

Last year at the NJIT Invitational, the Stags faced opponents from Quinnipiac, Saint Peter's, Sacred Heart, and host Highlanders.

In the singles top half, Sharissa Ryan made it to the finals where she dropped to NJIT's Kuzmenko, 6-1, 6-2. The Stag was 4-1 in singles on the day.

In the bottom half of the singles draw, three-time MAAC Player of the Year Monica Yajima went 1-1 on the day after a first round bye. She defeated Lavinia Cristescu from Quinnipiac, 8-1 then retired after going down 5-0 in the first set to NJIT's Jana Luste.

Ryan/Yajima were the standout duo for the Stags in doubles play making it to the semifinals. After a first round bye, the pair battled NJIT's Melibeu/Zanotta and came away with an 8-7(2) victory. In the third round, Ryan/Yajima defeated Raynor and Dassa from Quinnipiac then lost to Kuzmenko and Luste in the semifinals. The NJIT duo went on to win the title.

The Fairfield women's tennis team (1-0) will open their 2014 campaign in Queens, N.Y. at St. John's University on January 24 at 12pm.
