Baseball Downs Siena 9-2 To Sweep The Series

The Fairfield University baseball team keeps rolling right along as they downed Siena College, 9-2, this afternoon to complete the three-game series sweep of their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe.

At 12-9 in the MAAC, the Stags (24-25) are currently in third place in the standings and alive in the hunt for one of four berths to the 2012 MAAC Tournament with three games left to play. Manhattan, who is atop the league at 13-6, is in action against Saint Peter's College today while second-place Canisius (11-7) is facing fourth-place Marist College. Rookie Dean Sadik went 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored while senior Larry Cornelia went 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. Junior Jack Giannini continue to swing a hot bat hitting his first collegiate homerun to drive in three runs.

After Siena put together a two-run first inning, Fairfield countered in the top of the third pushing nine runs across the plate on four hits and an error. Cornelia and Sadik drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. With one out, Anthony Hajjar was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After Sadik scored on a wild pitch to put Fairfield on the board, Ryan Plourde walked to reload the bases for Tyler Wosleger who drew a walk and forced a run in.

Hajjar gave the Stags a 3-2 lead scoring on a wild pitch. Giannini then blasted a three-run homer to leftfield to extend Fairfield's lead to 6-2. The Stags loaded the bases once again and, this time, Cornelia delivered a two-run single to centerfield. An error by Siena led to Fairfield's final run of the inning and the 9-2 advantage.

Senior Brett Shulick shook off a shaky first inning and held the Saints in check for his final five innings of works, scattering just three hits. Shulick allowed just two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings overall to improve to 6-4 on the season. The last time Fairfield had a pitcher record at least six wins in a year was 2005 when Tim Dugan posted seven victories. 

Senior Gavin McCullough tossed two scoreless innings of relief scattering two hits while freshman Chris Kalica tossed a scoreless ninth.

The win was Fairfield's 24th of the season and is the second-highest single season total. It is the most victories since 2000 when squad posted a program-best 26 victories.

Fairfield turned two double plays on the day bringing its season total to 48 and setting the single season program record.

Fairfield will face non-league foe NJIT on Monday, May 14 at 6pm on Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium in Newark, N.J. The Stags close out the MAAC regular season, May 17-18, when they host Marist College at Alumni Diamond. The two teams will be play a single game on Thursday at 1pm followed by a doubleheader on Friday at 12pm. Prior to first pitch on May 18, the Stags will honor the Class of 2012.
