Baseball Shuts Down Fordham 9-0

FAIRFIELD, Conn. –
The Fairfield University baseball team pounded out 18 hits and saw seven batters with multi-hit games as the Stags shutout Fordham University, 9-0, this afternoon in a non-league game at Alumni Diamond.
 
Three Stags combined for the shutout victory. Freshman Jeremy Soule got his second win of the season after scattering four hits and two walks with two strikeouts over 5.1 innings. Freshman Chris Kalica threw 2.2 hitless innings of relief while senior Gavin McCullough closed it out in the ninth.
 
Senior Larry Cornelia and rookie Billy Zolga each went 3-for-5 on the day. Cornelia also had a double, drove in two, scored twice, and stole a base while Zolga had a double.
 
Sophomore Ryan Plourde went 2-for-5 with a double, a triple, one run scored, and one driven in. Jack Giannini went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Anthony Hajjar was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Rob LoPinto entered the game as a pinch hitter and finished 2-for-2 with a run scored. Sebastian Salvo went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.
 
Fairfield (11-17) got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. With runners at second and third and one out, Giannini roped a single to centerfield to clear the bases and give the Stags a 2-0 lead. Fairfield added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for the 4-0 advantage.
 
The Stags broke it open in the bottom of the seventh inning, pushing five runs across the plate. Senior Mark Skrapits made it 5-0 after exercising a squeeze bunt with one out. With two outs, Cornelia drove in two runs with a double down the left field line. Hajjar followed with an RBI double of his own while Plourde came through with an RBI triple to put the Stags ahead, 9-0.
 
John Porter (2-3) took the loss for Fordham (11-18), giving up two runs on five hits in 3.0 innings.
 
Fairfield returns to action on Saturday, April 7 as it hosts Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Rider University in a doubleheader beginning at 12pm on Alumni Diamond.
