WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Head Coach
Bill Currier recorded his 500th career victory this evening as the Fairfield University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Yale University at Yale Field. The Stags picked up a 4-3 win in opener and pulled out an 8-4 victory in the night cap.
Currier, in his first season at the helm of the Stags, owns a 500-489 record over the course of 23 seasons as a NCAA Division I head coach.
Junior
Anthony Hajjar went a combined 4-for-7 with five RBI while freshman
Sebastian Salvo was a combined 3-for-6. Senior
Tyler Wosleger was a combined 3-for-7 with three runs scored.
In the first game, Yale got to rookie starter
Jeremy Soule early. In the bottom of the first, Ryan Brenner led off with a double and came around to score on a squeeze bunt by Cale Hanson. Josh Scharff made it 2-0 with an RBI double to left field in the bottom of the second inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Brenner came through with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 but that's all the Bulldogs would get as rookie reliever
EJ Ashworth got the Stags out of the jam.
Fairfield (14-19) got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs,
Larry Cornelia reached on an error and scored on a Wosleger double that landed at the base of the right field wall. Wosleger then scored on an RBI single by Hajjar to pull the Stags within 3-2.
The Stags tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. Wosleger and Hajjar got things started with back-to-back singles. With one out,
Jack Giannini delivered an RBI single to centerfield to score Wosleger. Salvo then made it 4-3 with a double off the right field fence which scored Hajjar.
Yale (6-24-1) threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning, putting runners at first and second with two outs but Ashworth got Kevin Fortunato to fly out to left field to end the game. Ashworth improved to 2-4 on the season after scattering five hits and striking out four batters in 5.2 innings of scoreless relief.
In the night cap, the Stags opened up a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning.
Dean Sadik led off with a walk while
Rob LoPinto reached on a fielder's choice and Cornelia bunted for a base hit to load the bases. With one out, Hajjar sliced a single through the right side to push in two runs. With two outs, Giannini singled down the right field line to score Cornelia.
In the bottom of the third, Yale scored two runs on a double to the left field corner by Brenner to pull within 3-2. Fortunato, who started the second game on the mound, helped himself with an RBI single to right field to plate Brenner and tie the game. Yale went ahead, 4-3, on a sacrifice fly by Chris Piwinski.
In the top of the sixth, the Stags put runners on second and third with two outs. Yale intentionally walked Wosleger to load the bases for Hajjar. A passed ball allowed Sadik to score from third while Hajjar gave the Stags a 6-4 advantage with a single to right field. The Stags added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Junior
Kyle Capaldo improved to 2-0 on the year after tossing an inning of scoreless relief. Junior
Mark Bordonaro notched his first save of the season, throwing the final two innings of the game, striking out three of the six batters he faced. Freshman
Chris Kalica received the no-decision in his third start of the season. He allowed four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work.
It was the first time in program history in which the Fairfield has swept a doubleheader from Yale.
Fairfield has the weekend off and will return to action on April 17 when it hosts Big East foe UConn at Alumni Diamond at 3pm.
