FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to overtake Quinnipiac University, 6-3, in a non-league clash at Alumni Diamond.
Rookie
EJ Ashworth notched his first collegiate victory, throwing 5.0 scoreless innings of relief giving up just one hit and two walks while mowing down seven batters.
Senior
Tyler Wosleger drew five walks and scored three times for the Stags to keep his 10-game hitting streak intact. Left fielder
Jack Giannini went 2-for-4 with a run scored while rookie
Billy Zolga picked up two RBI.
Fairfield (9-14) struck in the bottom of the first inning as Wosleger walked, stole second, and scored easily on a
Ryan Plourde double to left center.
Quinnipiac (3-16) answered in the top of the third inning with a three-run effort. With two on and one out, Scott Donaghue cleared the bases with a double to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead. With two outs, Quinnipiac was able to score on a defensive error to push its lead to 3-1. The Stags got one of the runs back in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Zolga.
Fairfield tied it up in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single by
Anthony Hajjar which plated rookie
Dean Sadik.
In the bottom of the eighth, Quinnipiac walked the bases loaded. Zolga was then hit by a pitch to force in
Larry Cornelia to give Fairfield a 4-3 lead. Freshman
Ryan Donovan followed with a walk to force in another run while Giannini made it 6-3 with a sacrifice fly.
Ashworth set Quinnipiac down in order in the top of the ninth, striking out two of the three batters that came to the plate.
Freshman
Chris Kalica received the no-decision in a 4.0 inning outing in which he allowed just three runs, two earned, on three hits with four strikeouts. Quinnipiac's Kevin O'Connell received the no-decision in his start, allowing two runs on three hits and six walks. Ray Buckley (0-1) picked up the loss for the Bobcats after allowing two runs on a hit and two walks in an inning of relief.
Fairfield continues non-league play tomorrow, March 28, at University of Hartford. The Stags resume Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play over the weekend when they head to Saint Peter's College.
