FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team takes to the road for the first time this month when it heads to first-place Loyola University for key Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match up Sunday afternoon. The game will tip off at 4 pm and will be televised live on
ESPN3.
The Stags are coming off their fourth straight win with a 60-54 decision over Manhattan College on Thursday night. The game was also the final contest in a five-game home stand, which the team finished with a 4-1 record. Fairfield has only one home game left, hosting Saint Peter's College on February 15 at 7:30 pm.
Today's game includes two of the top defensive teams in MAAC play. Loyola is surrendering a conference-best 58.9 points per MAAC game this year, followed by Fairfield's 61.4 points per contest. The two teams also rate number one and two in overall scoring defense with the Stags allowing 62.0 points per game and the Greyhounds surrendering 63.6 points per contest. Loyola leads the conference with 9.2 steals per conference game, while the Stags are second with 8.2 thefts per game.
Rakim Sanders just missed a double-double with 22 points and nine rebounds, one of three Stags to score in double figures. Desmond Wade finished the contest with 13 points while Maurice Barrow tallied 11 markers in the victory. Wade raised his three-point field goal percentage to 52 percent in MAAC games which leads the conference. Overall, the junior places fourth in three-point field goal percentage.
Loyola, fresh off its home win against Iona College, brings a 19-5 overall record and a 12-2 MAAC mark into this game. Dylon Cormier is the team's top scorer with 14.5 points per game, while Erik Etherly ranks second with 13.5 points per game. Etherly is the Greyhounds' top rebounder at 7.7 caroms per contest, and is also the team's most accurate shooter at 55 percent.
Robert Olson is Loyola's top three-point threat, netting 51 long-range jumpers in 23 games. He is shooting 45 percent from beyond the arc.
