FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – The Fairfield University women's tennis team competed at the USTA Invitational this past weekend in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. 
 
Sophomore Allison Radde had an impressive outing facing student-athletes from Rutgers, NJIT and Morgan State.  Radde opened against Satreethai Sasinin in the round of 16, coming away with a 6-3, 6-2 victory.  In the quarterfinals, Radde defeated Martina Tripcovici of NJIT, 6-3, 6-0.  She was stopped in the semifinals by Morgan State's Mi'kola Cooper 6-1, 6-3.  Radde finished 2-1 in singles play on the day.
 
Three other Stags competed in singles play.  In flight 'A', Monica Yajima started the day on a strong note moving past Fordham's Amy Simidian 6-3, 6-2.  In the quarterfinals Yajima dropped to the three seed from Columbia, Kanika Vaidya.  Yajima finished 1-2 on the day after dropping her final match to an opponent from Dartmouth.  Sharissa Ryan also finished 1-2 on the day with her victory coming against Maria Bernardez from Providence.  Ryan's two losses were tough three-set defeats against opponents from Fordham and Dartmouth.  Carolina Koladzyn closed out singles play in flight 'I' opening the day with a win over NJIT's Hannelore MacDonald, 6-1, 7-5, but then dropped her following two matches.
 
In doubles play, Yajima and Koladzyn paired up for flight 1, going 1-1 on the day.  In the round of 16, the Fairfield duo fell to Fordham's Novacek/Simidian 8-3 but came right back to defeat Hande/Smith from NC State, 8-5.  In flight 3, Radde and Ryan battled against Columbia's Alecsiu/Kovacevic but came out on the losing end, 9-8, 7-6(5).
 
The women's tennis team will next compete at New England's in Providence, R.I. over the weekend of Oct. 13.
