Game Notes
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team gets back to work on Sunday, January 29 when it hosts Marist College at Webster Bank Arena. The game is scheduled for a 1 pm start. It's the second of five straight home games for the Stags.
Marist enter Sunday's game with a 7-13 overall record and is playing the second of three straight road games. The Red Foxes are playing five of six away from the McCann Arena.
The Red Foxes have two players who are averaging in double figures on a nightly basis, namely Devin Price and Chavaughn Lewis. Price is one of three student-athletes to start every game this season, joining Adam Kemp and Isaiah Morton. Price leads the team in scoring with a 13.5 scoring average, and is also the team's top three-point shooter with 33 long-range baskets. Lewis is next in line with 12.7 points per game, but has done so without starting a game this year.
Kemp has been a solid choice inside for the Red Foxes, averaging 9.3 points every forty minutes. The forward leads the team with 7.5 rebounds per game, and is averaging better than two blocks per outing. Kemp is also the team's most accurate shooter, making 45 percent of his field goals.
With Kemp's help, Marist is tied for the conference lead with 4.9 blocks per game, rejecting more than a 100 shots to this point. The Red Foxes are also one of the top offensive teams in the MAAC, averaging just under 70 points per game. The team has scored more than 80 points in six games this year, highlighted by a 95-point performance against Rider.
The Stags will play their second straight home game on Sunday afternoon after hosting Iona on Friday night.
Rakim Sanders, who was named to the Jesuit Spotlight Honor Roll for his efforts last week against Rider and Saint Peter's, led all scorers in the Iona game with 24 points. He remains the team's scoring lead with 16 points every forty minutes. He is also the team's top rebounder at 8.2 caroms per contest.
Derek Needham continues to play well in the backcourt, leading the team with 3.5 assists per game. He brings a streak of nine straight games in which he tallied more assists than turnovers. It is the longest such streak for any Stag this season. He is one of three Fairfield student-athletes to score in double figures this season, joining Sanders and
Ryan Olander (10.1 ppg).
Fairfield's front court continues to shoot the ball well, as the starting three student-athletes have combined for 51 percent from the field. All three players also rank in the top ten for field goal percentage in the MAAC, namely
Maurice Barrow,
Ryan Olander, and
Rakim Sanders. The trio combined to shoot 65 percent from the floor at Saint Peter's (20 of 31).
The Stags return to Webster Bank Arena on February 3 when they host Niagara University and on February 5 when Siena College comes to Bridgeport.
