Men's Basketball Hosts Rider University On Monday

Game Notes

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team concludes its two-game home stand by hosting Rider University on Monday, January 16 at Webster Bank Arena. Game time is slated at 7:30 pm. The Stags are in the midst of a stretch that sees the team at Webster Bank Arena for seven out of nine games.

Fairfield will try to rebound from Friday night's 66-63 setback to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) co-leader Loyola University. Monday's night game will be against Rider University, a team that was picked third in the MAAC pre-season rankings. The Broncs have played especially well over the last few weeks, enjoying a three-game win streak that was broken by Siena in the team's last game. Still, Rider remains one of the conference's hottest team with five wins in its last seven outings.

Daniel Stewart has been one of the main reasaons for the Broncs' strong play, coming into this game as the team's leader in several statistical categories. The sophomore is the team's top scorer and rebounder, collecting 13.3 points and 7.2 rebounds every forty minutes. Plus, he spends most of the game on the floor, averaging 32 minutes per game. Brandon Penn represents the team's top three-point shooter, netting 42 three pointers in 18 games. He also is the team leader with 20 steals.

The Stags look to return to their winning ways on Monday night, as they play back-to-back home games for the first time this season. Rakim Sanders dropped a team-high 17 points and secured a co-leading seven rebounds against the Greyhounds. The bench contributed 22 points to the Stags' cause, most of which came from Keith Matthews. The sophomore netted a season-high 13 points, his first double-digit scoring effort of the season. Matthews tallied most of his points from the free throw line, missing his first three charity tosses before making his final seven attempts.

After Monday's game, Fairfield will take to the road once again by playing Saint Peter's on Thursday night and Marist on Sunday afternoon. Following those two contests, the Stags will begin a five-game home stand which begins with a match up with MAAC co-leader Iona College on January 27.
